Celebrate Earth Day at the Museum of Discovery and Science
Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20, 2008

April 15, 2008 - Celebrate Earth Day at the Museum of Discovery and Science on Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20, 2008. In addition to offering hands-on fun for the whole family, the Earth Day weekend will host a variety of community partners, interactive demonstrations, games, and exciting animal encounters. Museum visitors will experience energy and lightning shows, see a solar powered race car, enjoy a special lineup of IMAX® nature films shown throughout the weekend and much more! Publix Super Markets, Inc. and Broward County Waste and Recycling Services and Partner Cities are co-sponsoring the Museum’s Earth Day celebration.
Earth Day Event Schedule April 19 & 20, 2008
Solar Powered Race Car!
Noon – 4:00 p.m.
Learn from the Solar Knights of South Plantation High School! The Dell-Winston School Solar Car Challenge was established twelve years ago to help motivate students to pursue careers in science and engineering. The Challenge teaches high school students how to build roadworthy solar cars. The Solar Knights competed in the 2007 Dell-Winston Challenge, a nine-day cross-country race stretching from Texas to New York! They will be showcasing their vehicle for Museum guests.
FPL’s Energy Whys? & Lightning Shows Presented by Mr. Robert Krampf

What do you get if you combine flaming marshmallows, water balloons, dust flares and other amazing stuff, all into one show? You get FPL’s newest science shows about energy and how we use it.
Recycle Fort Lauderdale
Noon – 5:00 p.m.
Representatives from the city’s recycling program will be giving out information on how the city does its part to promote a “greener” world, and how you can help reduce, reuse and recycle.
Learn How To Plant Your Own Organic Garden
2:00 p.m.
Demonstration of a “Raised Bed Garden” by Marry Ellen Mitchell-Rosen from Nova Southeastern University.
Broward County Waste & Recycling Reuse-It Art Corner
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Feeling Artistic? Great! Then come on over to the Reuse-It Art Corner and create your own art from recycled items. Reusing your trash instead of throwing it in the garbage can help conserve our natural resources and protect the Earth.
Publix GreenWise Market Sampling
Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. & Sunday, Noon – 6 p.m.
Try tasty samples of Publix GreenWise Market products.
German Bread Haus
Noon – 4:00 p.m.
German Bread Haus is the only local certified organic bakery in South Florida. They will provide samples of their Organic Flour Power breads. Learn about their preparing and baking techniques and how it benefits our planet.
Bat Chat
12:30 p.m. & 4:30 p.m.
Did you know that the Museum houses 12 Egyptian Fruit Bats? See a special demonstration about the lives of bats and how they do their part to take care of Earth.
South Florida Parenting

Earth Day activities are included in the exhibit admission to the Museum: $10 adults, $9 seniors, $8 children (2-12) for non-members. Exhibit admission is free for Museum members. A general admission ticket may be purchased (includes exhibit admission and one 45-minute IMAX® film): $15 adults, $14 seniors, $12 children (2-12).
