SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Opening Weekend Activities
Arabia 3D
February 13 & 14, 2010

  • Clever Camels
    1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Camels are very resourceful animals. They store water in their blood, food in their humps and they can walk effortlessly on sand. Join Museum staff as they demonstrate the scientific principles that explain why a camel can achieve such tasks. Learn about how the camel has adapted to life in the desert and learn about how camels rely on the distribution of pressure to achieve locomotion.
  • Creatures of the Red Sea
    2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The Red Sea is very unique in that no rivers flow into it. It’s where the desert meets the sea. It is 7,254 feet deep at its deepest point but in its shallow areas it has some of the most spectacular scuba diving sites in the world. Over 1,000 different invertebrates live in the Red Sea with 200 types of hard and soft corals. It was formed over 30 million years ago by the movement of plates under the Earth’s surface and its still growing today. Join Museum staff as they take you on an educational tour of this truly magnificent place.

Community Conversations on Climate
February 27, 2010
Noon – 5 p.m.

Join MODS in an effort to improve citizens’ access to climate information and increase public climate literacy. Personnel from NOAA’s Climate Program Office have partnered with the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) and museums around the country to pilot a new initiative called Community Conversations on Climate. These one-day workshops are being held in Science Centers around the country and offer citizens the opportunity to interact directly with climate scientists, local experts, and fellow citizens to learn more about how climate change may affect their lives and livelihoods. The program, which combines innovative data visualizations with opportunities for personal interaction with experts, is designed to leave participants better informed about local sources of information.

Coral Reef Explorers
Occurs daily through February 2010

Carnival Cruise Lines and the Museum of Discovery and Science both share a love and concern for the beautiful coral reefs that inhabit the warm oceans of South Florida. This October, the Museum will debut a new set of programs that will highlight coral reefs, marine conservation, and other ocean related science. These programs will be conducted from the new Carnival Cruise Lines, Reef Explorers LIVE! demonstration area. Here is just a sample of some of the new and engaging programs that will be part of this exciting new visitor experience at the Museum. Generously sponsored by Carnival Cruise Lines. *Note: Program topics and hours change daily.
  • It’s Alive!
Coral reefs aren’t just rocks, but millions upon millions of microscopic living animals. Look at coral polyps under a microscope, touch different types of coral that are found off the Florida Coast, and then take a look at the Museum’s very own Coral Reef aquarium.
  • Artificial Intelligence
No, not aliens, but new and intelligent ways scientists and kids are helping save the coral reefs by designing special artificial reefs called Reef Balls! Learn about these creations and other artificial reef projects and then design your own artificial reef.
  • Build a Boat!
Learn all about the science of sinking and floating. Experiment with water displacement, forces and density. Put your new science skills to the test by building your own boat and see if it is sea worthy.
  • The Aqua-Lab
Discover the importance of the coral reefs and why they are in danger. Learn about the causes of reef bleaching, conduct calcium testing, and study the effects of climate change on the coral reef ecosystems.
  • All Washed Up
Collecting sea shells is a great way to enjoy the shoreline. During this activity, reef explorers will touch interesting artifacts that the waves have pushed ashore like shells, sea glass, starfish and much more!
