Celebrate NanoDays With Us
March 27 – April 4, 2010
NanoDays is a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering and its potential impact on the future. NanoDays are organized by participants in the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net), and take place at over 200 science museums, research centers and universities across the country from Maine to Hawaii.Visit the Museum of Discovery and Science for nano-science presentations throughout the week, and learn where you can find the nano in your life.

Re-Cycle Relay Race!
1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
In this relay race, children will learn how to use the new “All-In-One” system known as “single-stream” recycling. They will learn what items can be placed into the single-stream bin and how this new system is more efficient than the old system.
The Pacific Ocean Vortex
1:30 p.m.
Learn about this swirling vortex of under-ocean currents that has accumulated an astonishing amount of trash and waste devastating to marine life.
Save the Animals
2:30 p.m.
We share this planet with our animal friends, who also depend on us doing what we can to keep earth in tip-top shape. Learn about the many ways animals can benefit from us humans doing the right thing, and even meet some of the Museum’s animals.
Make Your Own Recycled Paper!
3:30 p.m.
Experience the ancient art of paper making and find out how modern paper recycling works. You’ll even leave with a piece of recycled paper you made yourself.

Butterfly Release

Learn all about the short but amazing life of a butterfly during this exciting program, then release your own butterfly into the wild. *NOTE: This presentation is open to all Museum guests, but participants must purchase their living butterfly prior to the release segment of the program.

Learn about pet adoptions and many other special programs offered by the Humane Society.
Small Scales: A Baby Reptile Show

The museum is home to over 24 different species of reptiles. Some of them are very old, and some are still babies. During this show, you will learn about the life cycle of reptiles and meet some of the baby reptiles that call the museum home.

Each year more than 1,200 guests spend this magical evening at the Museum enjoying food, wine and music. The yearly event features a progressive sequence of amazing wine and sumptuous food pairings that together please the palette while simultaneously educating and entertaining. Be sure not to miss the VIP Martini Reception, the VIP Wine Tasting led by a master sommelier, our spectacular Silent Auction, and the very chic VIP Lounge. More than 30 of South Florida’s top restaurants and chefs will showcase select dishes, alongside over 200 wine samples from wineries around the world, courtesy of Southern Wine & Spirits.
VIP admission tickets are $150.00 per person, or $135.00 per person if purchased by March 11, 2010. VIP Admission includes: VIP reception from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, early admission to the grand tasting, admission to wine tasting seminars, a complimentary wine glass and access to the exclusive VIP Lounge from 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Three Little Pigs Engineering Challenge

I’ll huff and puff and I’ll blow your house down…or will I? During this challenge, families will try to build the stuffiest house out of straws, sticks and brings and then see how they stand up to the big bad wolf. Learn about building design and how different building materials stand up to strong storms and natural disasters.
Pin the Tail on Donkey

Blindfolded and dizzy, see if you can pin the tail on Shrek’s faithful and trustworthy sidekick…Donkey!
Swamp Stories

Shrek lives in a swamp, but did you know that you do too? The greater Everglades used to begin at central Florida and covered the entire state south of Lake Okechobee. Learn about the history of the Everglades, and meet some of the animals that call this swamp home.
Story Time in the Discovery Center
12:30 p.m.
For our younger guests, we will be hosting a story time in the Museum’s Discovery Center. A fair maiden will be reading some classic fairy tales that include many of the characters in the Shrek IMAX film.
Smell Lab: Big Whiff of Science
2:30 p.m.
After seeing Shrek, the big stinky ogre, on the giant IMAX screen, swing by our Smell Lab on the second floor for a chance to put your nose to the test and learn about the science of smell.

Join this group of dedicated kids as they conduct educational programs about the importance of water in our daily lives.
Lincoln’s Drinkin’
1:30 p.m. & 3:30 p.m.
Visitors will get a chance to conduct experiments with water and surface tension. Discover how many drops of water fit on top of a penny and learn why that’s important.
South Florida Water Management

Learn about the Greater Everglades Restoration Project and see what is being done to save our “river of grass.”
Coral Reef Explorers
Occurs daily through May 2010
Carnival Cruise Lines and the Museum of Discovery and Science both share a love and concern for the beautiful coral reefs that inhabit the warm oceans of South Florida. This October, the Museum will debut a new set of programs that will highlight coral reefs, marine conservation, and other ocean related science. These programs will be conducted from the new Carnival Cruise Lines, Reef Explorers LIVE! demonstration area. Here is just a sample of some of the new and engaging programs that will be part of this exciting new visitor experience at the Museum. It’s Alive!
Coral reefs aren’t just rocks, but millions upon millions of microscopic living animals. Look at coral polyps under a microscope, touch different types of coral that are found off the Florida Coast, and then take a look at the Museum’s very own Coral Reef aquarium.
Artificial Intelligence
No, not aliens, but new and intelligent ways scientists and kids are helping save the coral reefs by designing special artificial reefs called Reef Balls! Learn about these creations and other artificial reef projects and then design your own artificial reef.
Build a Boat!
Learn all about the science of sinking and floating. Experiment with water displacement, forces and density. Put your new science skills to the test by building your own boat and see if it is sea worthy.
The Aqua-Lab
Discover the importance of the coral reefs and why they are in danger. Learn about the causes of reef bleaching, conduct calcium testing, and study the effects of climate change on the coral reef ecosystems.
All Washed Up
Collecting sea shells is a great way to enjoy the shoreline. During this activity, reef explorers will touch interesting artifacts that the waves have pushed ashore like shells, sea glass, starfish and much more!
